Welties runner turns months of training into 10km personal best
A local runner records her fastest 10km run in her running journey.
Months of consistent training, mental resilience and encouragement from fellow runners paid off for a local athlete who achieved a personal best after completing a challenging 10km at the Northgate Road Race on July 19.
According to Rentia Kruger, the race tested her both physically and mentally, with steep hills proving to be the biggest challenge on the course. However, preparation that included regular weekday runs and recently added strength training helped to tackle the demanding route.
Rather than becoming overwhelmed by the distance, Kruger focused on reaching one waterpoint at a time and continued pushing forward. Support from fellow Run/ Walk for Life members also motivated the race.
“I didn’t hit the wall. I focused on the next waterpoint and kept going. The encouragement from my fellow Run/ Walk for Life members really carried me through,” she said.
As the finish line came into view, the focus shifted to finishing strongly. The effort resulted in her fastest-ever 10km time, with the final result of 1:10:29 exceeding expectations.
“It was a wonderful surprise,” Kruger said.
The race also highlighted the importance of mental strength. According to her, the mind can sometimes want to give up before the body does, making a positive attitude essential when facing difficult moments.
The achievement has also offered encouragement to aspiring runners who may be considering entering their first race.
“Every runner starts somewhere, and every finish line builds confidence. Running has taught me that there is no reason to fear starting lines or other new beginnings,” she concluded.
