Honeydew Bowling Club was transformed into a colourful celebration of flower power when 112 bowlers gathered for the club’s annual Ladies Day on August 13.

This year’s ‘Feeling Groovy’ theme brought the spirit of the 1960s and 1970s to the greens, with participants dressing in vibrant retro outfits for a day of bowls, entertainment and fundraising.

The day began at 08:00 with breakfast before the women took to the greens for a morning of competitive bowls. Organisers had initially been concerned that the recent icy winter weather could put a dampener on proceedings, but the cold conditions cleared in time for sunshine and favourable playing conditions.

Adding to the atmosphere was a live DJ, who performed on the greens and kept the flower-power theme alive while the competition unfolded.

After a lively morning of bowls, participants moved indoors for a light lunch before the official prize-giving ceremony.

The event is the club’s biggest fundraising initiative of the year, with proceeds going towards the ongoing maintenance and upkeep of the bowling greens and clubhouse.

The day ended on a high note for the home side, with a Honeydew team claiming the overall victory.

Barbara Rickard, Maureen Dealey, Margaret Waghorn, and Dot Kuipers combined for a winning performance to take the top prize, giving Honeydew Bowling Club a home-turf victory to round off the celebrations. The team from Randburg Bowling Club came in second place. The team from Randfontein Bowling Club won the Best Dressed and Best Vibes on the greens category prizes.

With its combination of themed outfits, sunshine, music, bowls and fundraising, the annual Ladies Day once again provided members and participants with an opportunity to enjoy the sport while supporting the continued upkeep of the club.
