Welties runner celebrates a milestone

What started as a simple decision to walk and run has turned into a remarkable 30 000km milestone for Allen’s Nek resident Janette Hamming, who has spent nearly 25 years making fitness part of her life.

Hamming started walking and running in 2001 and recently reflected on the distance she has covered over the years.

“I am surprised to be able to have done 30 000km,” she said.

Born in the Netherlands and raised in southern Brazil, Hamming has lived in Allen’s Nek for many years. Her journey with Run/ Walk For Life (RWFL) Weltevreden Park began about 24 years ago when she was asked to become a road leader.

Since then, she has helped guide and support fellow walkers and runners while continuing to pursue her own fitness goals.

Hamming has participated in numerous road races, including the Irene 21km, Cradle of Humankind 10km, several SPAR Ladies 10km races, Valentine’s Day races and the Clearwater 10km.

She has also taken part in cancer relays during the night in Krugersdorp and completed 102 parkruns at different locations.

Despite reaching the 30 000km milestone, Hamming continues to walk and run three times a week with RWFL Weltevreden Park.

She believes the achievement is about more than distance. She values the friendships and encouragement she has gained through the sport, as well as the benefits of spending time outdoors.

“I found wonderful friends, always motivating and caring for each other,” she said.

Hamming believes walking and running have also helped her manage stress and contributed positively to her emotional and physical well-being.

With 30 000km now behind her, she has already set her sights on another challenge. Her next goal is to complete a further 10 000 to 15 000km in her lifetime.

Hamming’s milestone stands as proof that consistency can turn small steps into an extraordinary achievement.

“All our achievements start with small steps,” she concluded.
