Ethan de Freitas dominates SM65 Class at Formula K
The young rider produced three controlled heat victories on his 65cc motorcycle to secure top spot in Round 5.
Reigning 2025 SM65 champion Ethan de Freitas completed a clean sweep of the class at Formula K in in Poortview, winning all three heats to take overall victory in Round 5 of the South African Short Circuit Series (SASCS) on August 29.
De Freitas started on pole position after setting the fastest qualifying time of 1:23.307. Racing for the EDF Racing Team, de Freitas led Heat 1 from the opening corner and controlled all eight laps.
He recorded a best lap of 1:19.822 before finishing 8.786 seconds ahead of teammate Marnitz Otten. The result earned de Freitas 25 points, with Otten taking 20.
Title race lead tightened
De Freitas continued his winning form in Heat 2, leading from start to finish and setting a personal-best lap of 1:19.478. He crossed the line 8.226 seconds ahead of Otten to claim another 25 points.
The final heat followed a similar pattern, with de Freitas taking control early and maintaining his lead over the eight laps. He finished 5.943 seconds ahead of Otten to complete the three-heat clean sweep.
De Freitas finished the round on 75 points, while Otten took second overall with 60. The result has also tightened the battle for the SASCS Womza Regional Championship. Otten currently leads the standings on 257 points, with de Freitas three points behind on 254.
Team coach praises riders
EDF Racing Team head coach Mario de Freitas praised the riders after the round.
“Qualifying was just perfect,” he said.
He also congratulated both riders on their performances, describing the fifth round as an incredible Round 5 of the 2026 season, and thanked all their sponsors and supporters.
With the championship battle separated by just three points, the remaining rounds will be important for both riders as they continue their fight for the 2026 title.
