Dr Havinga defeats TKSWR in U11 cricket clash
A strong middle-order partnership helped Laerskool Dr Havinga chase down their target against The King's School West Rand.
The King’s School West Rand (TKSWR) U11 cricket team suffered an eight-wicket defeat against Laerskool Dr Havinga in a 20-over match, posting 103/6 before their opponents chased down the target to reach 108/2 in 9.5 overs.
TKSWR batted first, with the top order putting runs on the scoreboard before a late-innings collapse restricted the host team’s total. Sports coordinator Thlogi Letshwene said the top-order batters did their job to build a foundation, but the late loss of wickets limited their final score.
According to Letshwene, Ethan de Freitas was one of TKSWR’s leading contributors, scoring 34 runs off 50 balls, including eight fours. Dr Havinga then began their chase and reached 108/2 in 9.5 overs to secure the victory.
Middle-order partnership turns game
Letshwene identified a match-winning partnership between Dr Havinga batters Luan and Zian as the turning point in the contest. Luan scored 24 runs, while Zian contributed 46 to lead their side’s run chase. Letshwene noted that the partnership made it difficult for the home side to fight back.
He said TKSWR’s bowling performance included several solid overs, but extras and boundary balls ultimately allowed Dr Havinga to reach the target.
TKSWR’s fielding was a stronger area of performance, with Letshwene noting that players worked hard to stop singles and boundaries.
On the bowling front, TKSWR’s Xixiang Jin took 1/7 from two overs, while Dr Havinga bowler Azario took 2/11 from four overs. Letshwene said the Kings will focus on improving their bowling lines and lengths as well as their running between the wickets, noting that the team loses many runs by failing to take single and double runs while batting.
The sports coordinator said matches against strong opposition are important in the development of young players because they allow them to assess their performances against stronger teams and help coaches identify areas that need improvement. He said the team would use the experience to continue working on its performance ahead of future matches.
