Ruimsig runners pay tribute to slain Kempton Park athlete Elizabeth ‘Tsontso’ Moselakgomo
Local athletes transform a morning workout into a tribute to highlight safety concerns for women using public spaces.
Runners gathered in Ruimsig on September 18 to honour the memory of Elizabeth ‘Tsontso’ Moselakgomo and take a stand against the ongoing crisis of gender-based violence and femicide in South Africa.
Lacing up in their standard running kit, participants transformed a routine morning run into a solemn act of remembrance and solidarity. The gathering highlighted severe safety concerns for women using public roads, trails, and open spaces for everyday exercise.
Local runner Nadine Crouch noted that the tribute served as a platform for the community to demand actionable change. Participants stood together to amplify their message, urging key decision-makers and law enforcement authorities to implement stronger protective measures for women nationwide.
Police are investigating the death of 38-year-old Moselakgomo, who went missing during an afternoon run in Kempton Park on September 9, which sent shockwaves through South Africa’s athletic community. The Ruimsig event is one of many tribute runs held across Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town in her honour.
Participants reiterated a clear message: Running and exercising in public spaces should build health and community, not put women’s lives at risk.
