Muay-Thai fighter ready for competitive debut
A journey that started with a desire to improve his fitness has led a local fighter to the Muay-Thai ring, where he is preparing to make his competitive debut.
Jayden Holmes, a Ruimsig-based fighter with no prior sporting background, is embarking on a new combat sports journey as he prepares to make his competitive debut at the Boskruin Community Centre on October 10.
Holmes told the Roodepoort Northsider his interest grew after watching the UFC and ONE Championship tournaments, prompting him to search for a local martial arts gym.
He joined Elite Muay-Thai, where he began honing his skills under head coach Wade Rendall. He explained that the mental discipline required in fighting was a primary reason he decided to test himself in the ring.
“It’s not just about being strong or aggressive. You have to stay calm under pressure, work hard, and be willing to improve every day,” Holmes said.
His preparation has involved intensive physical conditioning, technical drills, and mental preparation. Holmes noted that managing outside life while staying focused on training was one of his biggest initial hurdles.
“Life doesn’t stop just because you have a fight coming up. Things happen outside the gym, but you still have to walk through those doors and put in the work,” he said.
Describing his fighting style as aggressive yet controlled, Holmes aims to keep the pressure on his opponents without abandoning strategy.
“I like to keep the pressure on, but at the same time, I’m trying to think while I fight rather than just throwing techniques without a plan,” he explained.
In the final weeks leading up to the bout, training has centred on weight management, conditioning, and sharpening combinations so that execution becomes second nature. Coming to terms with the reality of full-contact competition was another hurdle he had to overcome.
“Knowing that another person is going to step into the ring with the intention of hurting me was a difficult reality to accept,” he admitted. “But I’ve trusted my coach, increased the intensity, and worked on becoming comfortable outside my comfort zone.”
Heading into his first fight, Holmes is approaching the contest with unwavering confidence.
“I’m training with the mindset of a contender who has come to take the title. I’m not willing to give up on a fight. No matter what happens or what I get hit with, I’m going to keep coming forward,” he concluded.
