Fitness club brings community together through Zumba in the park

Music, movement, and South African heritage came together at Rooitou Park as Mojo Dance Fitness hosted a high-energy Heritage Day Zumba session.

Mojo Dance Fitness brought residents together through music, movement, and fitness during a vibrant Zumba session at Rooitou Park on Saturday, September 26, held in celebration of Heritage Day.

The session aimed to create a fun, inclusive way for community members to honour South Africa’s diverse heritage while staying active and building local connections.

According to Mojo Dance Fitness member Marlene Riley, the event was inspired by the belief that fitness should be accessible and welcoming to everyone.

“We wanted to create an opportunity for people of all ages and fitness levels to come outdoors, have fun, celebrate our diverse South African heritage, and experience the positive energy that comes from moving together,” Marlene said.

Participants enjoyed energetic music and dance-based routines tailored to accommodate absolute beginners alongside experienced Zumba enthusiasts. Marlene emphasised that perfection is never the goal.

“Zumba is not about being a perfect dancer – it is about moving your body, enjoying yourself, and connecting with the people around you,” she explained.

The programme offers a range of physical and emotional wellbeing benefits. The dance routines deliver a high-energy cardiovascular workout that boosts endurance, co-ordination, and mobility. Beyond physical health, organisers noted that group dancing helps lift moods, relieve stress, and build self-confidence.

Community response to Mojo Dance Fitness has been overwhelmingly positive, drawing participants across different age groups and fitness backgrounds.

“We have created a space where people feel welcomed and supported, and we love seeing participants grow in confidence while building friendships along the way,” said Marlene.

The Heritage Day event showcased how local fitness initiatives can unite a neighbourhood – celebrating culture, community, and health all in one step.
