This sport is not for girls I say

No, not watching sport and not just any easy, laid-back low on activity sport like bowls. I opted to go for something like netball. Fast, lots of action and by action I mean spending more time on all fours on the ground (because my legs gave in) than running around.

Apart from being the oldest in the netball group, I am probably also the most unfit of them all. The team consists of youngsters (school-going kids) and middle-aged woman. Now I am sure you ask why netball, especially at my age? Well, I like netball and as you must have gathered by now, I do things a little differently (like putting my taste buds to the test).

Oh, and I decided that I don’t want to look like a fully inflated beach ball anymore (and the doctor said I should exercise more). So, netball it is, and it’s fun. Loads of fun.

We practice three times a week at a school in Krugersdorp and every now and again we play against other teams. So far we’ve had our butts kicked every time we’ve played a friendly game, mainly because we are so unfit (at least I am) and of course my height is not in my favour. But it’s still fun.

Our practice sessions usually end up in a laugh-a-minute session with not a lot of practising skills sessions. But it’s okay, we have fun and we still manage a little bit of exercise in between.

Last Sunday, the cricket guys, who practise at the same times as we do, challenged the netball girls to a game of cricket. Being extremely brave and enthusiastic, we accepted the challenge. Apart from the fact some of us ended up looking like tomatoes (winter sun is just as bad as summer sun), we have to deal with aching bodies as well. Bowling and batting is just not for girls.

I think I should rather take up baking or knitting. I know my cooking is good because the smoke alarm also cheers me on.

Until next week, take care of one another.

Ciao
