Grand old tennis club looking to restore its place in the hearts of Florida Park residents
“You don't have to be a pro, we aim for upliftment at all levels.”
The coming year will hopefully be one of refurbishment, rejuvenation and reimagining as the community embraces the potential of the future.
Florida Park Tennis Club has been nestling quietly in the corner of Trezona Park, waiting for the days when they will reclaim their former glory. Situated in the heart of Florida’s recreational district, the club’s role in providing the community with a quality sporting venue is a long and storied one. Originally the municipal workers recreational facility back in the 40s and 50s, it even boasted French-style clay courts that one would find at Roland Garros as recently as the 1960s.

Denis Brown has been a member since the early 80s and has been chairman for the last seven years. “A lot of work has gone into keeping the club running over the years. We have had great members and we are always looking to invite new ones,” he said. The club boasts six well-maintained courts, tranquil shaded viewing areas and an exquisite bar area wrapped up in a friendly atmosphere.
Breathing fresh impetus into the club is their new partnership with Child Active Tennis Academy, led by Marcel Grobbelaar. “The club has a rich history. It has been one of the premier clubs on the West Rand that has produced great talent and we want to put the club back on the map,” said Marcel. Along with his talented coaches, they will be focusing on the community’s young talent in a drive to produce the next ATP or WTA star.
“You don’t have to be a pro, we aim for upliftment at all levels,” encouraged Marcel. Whatever your strength or skill level, the club offers a welcoming environment for serious tennis players and families alike. For more information, contact Louise Kruger on 082 859 7893.
