Police issue smash and grab warning

PARKVIEW – Police have issued a warning to motorists, particularly female drivers, following a number of smash and grab incidents.

Criminals, who exploit elements of speed and surprise, are targeting women and solo drivers at smash and grab hotspots along the intersections of Barry Hertzog Avenue and Empire Road; Barry Hertzog and Napier Road, under the bridge; and Empire and Wabord roads.

Police said criminals are specifically targeting, but are not limited to, female drivers who are travelling alone during on and off peak traffic hours. This was because women were viewed as easier targets by the criminals, however men should also exercise caution, police said.

Drivers are advised not to have any visible valuable items lying in their vehicle as this could attract criminals to smash their vehicle’s window and grab valuable items before running out of sight. Police advised drivers to put all their valuables and bags in their boot, out of the view of possible thieves.

Community members and drivers who notice suspicious behaviour or witness a smash and grab incident along these roads are requested to call the police immediately.

Details: Captain Mkhize, 071 603 9114.
