Cancer Warrior Walk to commemorate World Cancer Day

PARKVIEW – The Breast Health Foundation, in partnership with the Johannesburg Zoo, Cancer Alliance and others, prepare to launch the first-ever One Step at a Time Cancer Warrior Walk.

The first annual One Step at a Time Cancer Warrior Walk will be coming to the Johannesburg Zoo as a commemoration for World Cancer Day on 4 February.

Organisers of the event, the Breast Health Foundation, encourage all those who wish to pledge their support on the day, to participate in the event. Chief operating officer of the Breast Health Foundation, Louise Turner, said the walk aims to pay homage to and express solidarity with the ‘cancer warriors’ – those battling with, or those who have cancer.

“We warmly invite those whose lives have in some way been touched by cancer or who simply wish to honour those who have been impacted by this condition to join us for the scenic 5km walk through the Johannesburg Zoo,” said Turner.

“World Cancer Day is the ideal opportunity to raise awareness about the disease, and it’s for this exact reason that we’re partnering with Cancer Alliance – a collective group of cancer NPOs and cancer advocates – in the hosting of this walk.”

Chief operating officer of the Breast Health Foundation, Louise Turner, said the walk will pay homage to and express solidarity with the ‘cancer warriors’.

Ntokozo Dludla, an avid palliative care worker and senior community educator, is one who strives to ensure breast cancer patients get the best care possible. She, however, said that the work can be emotionally draining, adding that her love for her job is what keeps her going. Being a Breast Cancer survivor herself, Dludla knows that the reality of cancer can be dark and gloomy.

“My work is about supporting people to live their lives despite sometimes end-of-life diagnosis,” said Dludla. “I became an educator to support people to live their lives as fully as possible despite [any] limitations.”

Details: The walk will be held between 7.30am and 1pm. Gates open at 6am. A R100 fee is payable per participant, which will be used to support the Breast Health Foundation. Tickets should be purchased through Quicket prior to the event.
