Temporary shelters at a premium during Covid-19
SANDRINGHAM – A meeting with top officials from the City is expected to find a solution.
More than 100 displaced people in the north-eastern area of Johannesburg still need to be placed in temporary shelters amid the national lockdown.
This according to Ward 81 councillor Irene Rugheimer in reply to questions sent to her by North Eastern Tribune on 1 April.
Rugheimer said they were struggling to find temporary shelters for these people because those identified were already full.
“We have identified over 100 homeless people in the area which covers more than Ward 81,” added Rugheimer.
“Ward 81 includes the squatters on the Sanral property next to the N3. Other than those living on the Sanral property, people have been living on the streets. We also have waste collectors living on the corner of Modderfontein and Club roads, on Pasteur Road in the park as well as other parks in the area which were identified.”
She cited Windsor West Assessment, Dan Street Assessment and Governors House Assessment centres and 3 De Kotze Street in Hillbrow as some of the shelters identified.
Besides not having enough shelters, the councillor said the City was requesting assistance with blankets and food for these people.

Rugheimer added that a meeting with City officials and local authorities such as the police would be held soon to try and identify more temporary shelters.
The spokesperson for the City, Nthatise Modingoane confirmed that most of their shelters were full. “We have a disaster management joint operation centre which the councillor can contact and space will be allocated to those who need shelter,” said Modingoane.
“We have also utilised some recreation centres across the city and some people have even offered space… space is allocated as and when there is a need.”
