Dancing, singing, pageantry, and acting have a home at Jozi Youth Empire
Youth activist Mapula Mojela was inspired by the social ills she saw everyday in Norwood, establishing Jozi Youth Empire to help keep the youth off the streets.
The social ills in Norwood, Orange Grove, and the surrounding areas continue to fuel Norwood youth activist Mapula Mojela.
They fire her passion for her non-profit organisation (NPO), Jozi Youth Empire (JYE), which is aimed at keeping youth off the streets while empowering them through arts and educational programmes.
Mojela, who was born and raised in the Norwood community, explained that her interest in bettering the youth arose from the social ills that have plagued the community over the years.

“Over the years, I saw how substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, and gender-based violence were becoming a norm in the community. This inspired me to start my NPO, which ensures the youth is safe and occupied with activities at Paterson Park.”
The 28-year-old’s NPO offers programmes which include dancing, music, modelling, drama, and public speaking. Classes are held every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Fridays from 15:30–17:30.
The founder noted that although she had sponsors who assisted with resources, the major challenge was funding.
“The NPO aims to do a lot for the youth, which requires funds. We want to go on educational trips and attend workshops, which requires money that parents don’t have. We also still don’t have branding, costumes, or banners to advertise ourselves.”

She added that she did not allow finances to deter her or the youth she was helping. Recently, Rorisang Simelane, JYE 1st Princess 2026, had the opportunity to showcase her talent and confidence on the prestigious South Africa Kids Fashion Week (SAKFW) runway.
“We are so proud of Rorisang for representing JYE with grace, confidence, and excellence. This is exactly what JYE is all about, empowering young people, nurturing their talents, and creating meaningful opportunities for them to shine.”
The youth activist said the NPO’s upcoming events include the crowning of Miss JYE 2027 in December, which was a momentous event, hosting speakers whose aim was to inspire the youth to become the best versions of themselves.
