Greenside Primary wins city’s Science Scuffle

Six learners from Greenside Primary School proved that they are future scientists after winning City of Johannesburg's Science Scuffle finals.

Greenside Primary School has been declared the winner of the City of Johannesburg’s Science Scuffle competition, taking first place in the metropolitan finals held at Noordgesig Library on June 11.

The Science Scuffle is an inter-school knockout quiz featuring grades 6 and 7 learners. Hosted by the City of Johannesburg’s library and information services directorate (LIS), the competition tested learners’ knowledge about science by making use of material from special science collections available in libraries.

The Greenside Primary team excelled, outperforming schools from across Johannesburg to secure the win at the final prize-giving ceremony.

Councillor Thapelo Amad, member of the mayoral committee for community development, commended the participants, and praised their devotion to learning.

“This competition has shown the thirst for knowledge among our young people. In the bigger picture, all the teams are winners. You have demonstrated the spirit of the youth of this country.”

The programme was aimed at teaching learners how to find and make use of information from different resources. This, in turn, helped them acquire research skills, assisting them in their futures.

The competition consisted of teams of six learners, competing through several stages, including library, zonal, regional, and metropolitan rounds.

Competitors were challenged to answer questions quickly and accurately, with only the 16 fastest and best schools going to the next stage of the competition

Amad thanked the organisers and stakeholders involved in the initiative. “The city is proud of you, and remains committed to supporting this initiative.”

The competition’s prizes were sponsored by the Friends of the Johannesburg Libraries.

The final results were:
• Greenside Primary School – First place,
• Robertsham Primary School – Second place,
• Glenridge Primary School – Third place, and
• Paterson Park Primary School – Fourth place.
