Maryvale College Primary School welcomed a new group of Grade 1s and pre-schoolers on 17 January.
There was a lot of tears and excitement on the first day of school. Grade 1 teacher at the school Lerato Mukoni said she was extremely excited to start teaching and showing the children new things.
“It’s an amazing thing for young children to enter big school because everything is new to them,” she added. “We are all excited to guide them from one phase to another.”

Mukoni said the first week was used to start teaching but also to help the children make new friends. The school also put emphasis on their anti-bullying programme in the first week. “We have a programme where every day for the first week we teach them a little about bullying, what it is and how to respond to it.”
The Maryvale College Preschool also welcomed some new faces. Preschool teacher Nancy Smith said, “They were very shy when they first came because they struggle to be away from their parents, but this week they have gotten used to everything and they all making new friends.”

She added that once many of them have settled in the school, the learning experience became more engaging and they became more open in the classroom.
