Kingsmead College 90th birthday celebrations include the unveiling of the statue, custodians of courage.

Kingsmead College kickstarted their 90th birthday celebrations with Goodwill Day on October 7.

The school’s director of service Karen Landi said Goodwill Day marked the beginning of celebrations which were set to continue until the end of the month.

“Service is one of the values taken seriously at the school and today is all about that. Another form of our celebrations will be the introduction of our sculptor who engaged with our learners from Grade 000 through matric on a statue called ‘Custodians of courage’ which will be unveiled in the coming weeks.”

Kingsmead College executive head Lisa Palmer added the school had a rich history of service.

“Goodwill Day began when the school was founded and was to mark the school’s birthday but instead of celebrating ourselves, it was more about how we serve our community. We also unveiled new gates we call ‘gates of open and welcoming’.”

Landi concluded that in light of the spirit of being welcoming, each school in the area had a rose which represented each institute, and the Kingsmead one was named ‘free and loyal’.

“We bought roses from different schools and planted them along our path so that learners from different schools who come to our school can feel a sense of belonging in our school.”
