Adoption home gets a splash of colour

WESTCLIFF – A visit by a non-governmental organisation and a group of volunteers left Princess Alice Adoption Home that much more brighter.
Community Environmental Education Project’s Nicole Heiman and volunteers from various Gauteng branches of Legal Aid South Africa painted murals in some of the home’s rooms.
“At different times over the years volunteers have worked hard painting murals in the home, so there’s never been a continual theme throughout the home. Heiman contacted us around the time we thought about having all the murals repainted,” said home manager Jo-Anne Schermeier.
The playroom, nursery and changing room walls were repainted in one colour, courtesy of Revamp, and AAA School of Advertising’s Marilyn du Toit did the drawings that would form the foundation of the cheerful paintings.
The volunteers were joined by former school lecturer Charmaine Zambetti.
“The murals in the playroom use primary colours and basic shapes, as they help the learning process and aren’t over stimulating for the children,” said Schermeier.
The paint used by the volunteers was sponsored for the project by Dulux.
“The home has been here since 1930 and relies on community support, in terms of both volunteers and donations. I’m grateful for the support we do receive and it was wonderful to see the work done by this partnership of people today,” said Schermeier.
Heiman added, “It’s so special when people come together like this; people who’ve asked themselves what they can do to make a difference, to add even more colour to our rainbow nation.”
