Grannies spread warmth and kindness to Orange Grove learners

Handmade beanies, heartfelt lessons, and plenty of smiles filled the Orange Grove Primary School library as a group of dedicated Croknit grannies helped learners prepare for winter.

As winter begins to settle in, a group of dedicated women has ensured that dozens of young learners will face the cold with warmth, comfort, and an important lesson in kindness.

Members of the Croknit group, including residents from Sandringham Gardens and Golden Acres, spent months during the summer carefully knitting and crocheting handmade beanies for the Grade 1 learners of Orange Grove Primary School.

Recently, three of the group’s much-loved grannies, Nan Hackner, Judy Levin, and Beulah Chatz, visited the school’s library to hand over the colourful beanies to the excited learners.

The library was filled with smiles and excitement as each learner received a handmade gift created especially for them.

For many of the children, the beanies represented more than protection from the winter chill. They were a reminder that people in the community care deeply about their well-being.

The school’s library volunteers, Marion Bloch, Gill Jankelowitz, and Andy Marks, who host literary sessions for the learners, supported the special visit.

The sessions focus on themes of compassion, generosity, and recognising opportunities to help others.

Teachers and volunteers said the day highlighted the importance of community spirit and the impact small acts of kindness could have on young lives.

Through every stitch and every story shared, the Croknit group and volunteers demonstrated how simple gestures can bring warmth, not only for winter, but also for the heart.
