According to Parkview police spokesperson Princess Mudau, the woman answered the intercom and a man, speaking in isiZulu, asked her to open the gates as he was there to work.
“She saw two men standing at the gate of the house near the corner of Athlone and Waterford Avenues, and told them she did not know there were people coming to work. The man demanded to know her employer’s phone number,” said Mudau.
The domestic worker gave her employer’s telephone number to the man when she saw a white bakkie with a canopy and stepladder parked at the gate.
A few minutes later, the man told the woman he had spoken to her employer, and she opened the gates for them.
As she returned to the house, two men grabbed her from behind, covered her mouth, and tied up her hands and legs. She was taken to the bathroom, where the men then covered her eyes. One of the men remained with her while the others searched through the house after taking the woman’s two cellphones.
Once the men left, the woman managed to untie herself, and called her neighbours and a security company.
“They checked the house and found that one flatscreen TV and three laptops were missing,” said Mudau.
The value of the stolen items was estimated at R50 000. No arrests have been made.
