Children’s theatre to host The Secret Garden

This heart-warming classic of children’s literature is adapted and directed by Francois Theron and the production has been made possible by part of a grant of R3 million from the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund.

The story unfolds around Mary Lennox, a young English girl orphaned in India, who is sent to England to the home of her mysterious and sorrowful uncle, after her parents died from a cholera epidemic.

She is a sickly, bad-tempered little girl who loves no one and whom no one loves.

Her uncle is not much good as an uncle – or indeed as a father. He neglects his sickly son whom he expects to die. He has been in a state of inconsolable grief since his wife died 10 years ago. In his grief he locks the door to the garden his wife loved, and hides the key.

Mary’s life undergoes a remarkable change as she uncovers the secrets of both Misslethwaite Manor and her neglected cousin Colin who hides from everyone.

She meets the “crusty” gardener Ben and his apprentice Dickon who understands the language of birds, animals and flowers. She discovers The Secret Garden and with their help coaxes it back to life – roses bloom again, daffodils burst through the earth and tall white lilies reach for the sky. Something wonderful and magical begins to touch the lives of all that enter The Secret Garden.

A spell-binding play featuring a talented cast that will delight children and grown-ups alike. Typical period costumes, imaginative décor, audience participation, mystery, suspense, humour, fascinating characters, beautiful dialogue and a happy ending.

What ensues is a compelling mixture of love, suspense and rebirth in which the power of nature gives way to miracle and magic.

This is interactive theatre at its best, a family show to be enjoyed by all.
