Jubilation and nostalgia filled the atmosphere at Parktown High School for Girls on August 28 as the school observed its 103rd birthday.

Addressing staff and old girls from as far back as 1976, headmistress Gail Davidson spoke about the school’s history and what it has become.

“As an old girl, the significance of today is far more for me than for some people. It’s our birthday, and we are 103 years old; there aren’t many schools in the country that can say that.”

Davidson said the celebration was an opportunity to look back at the history of the school and see how far it had come.

“We say this is an institution, but we are truly speaking of all the old girls and the girls present this year who will be adding to the legacy other girls can look back on.”

The celebrations included a fundraiser which saw Grade 11s put their entrepreneurship skills to the test to add to the money they have been collecting to donate to a charity of their choice.

Representative Council of Learners member Ngwedi Bogopa said she felt privileged to be part of such a legacy and celebrate the school’s milestone birthday.

“Marking a 103rd birthday is a huge milestone which fosters a good relationship of trust between learners and the school because of its rich history in academia,” said Bogopa.

“I feel privileged to attend a school that has many facets that I am allowed to explore while being myself.”
