Wits students fight against hunger

Wits students dug deeper into their pockets and donated towards the scheme to feed the hungry students on campus.

Through the poverty-alleviation scheme called ProjectW, the students handed over more than 3 000 cans of non-perishable food and a cash donation to vulnerable students.

The donation will be allocated by the Wits Volunteer Programme, an office in the Division of Student Affairs currently supporting close to 200 students threatened by food insecurity due to financial challenges.

According to a survey by ProjectW, about 3 000 students lacked accommodation, academic support and were confronted by hunger.

Project leader Awande Zwane said the food would ensure that no student was hungry, especially during the examination period.

On behalf of the university, Karuna Singh commended the efforts by ProjectW to mobilise resources and building a caring student body.

Singh said, “The meal packaging event is meant to be a fun and rewarding experience. It is also an opportunity for our volunteers to be part of an initiative which supports fellow students.”
