CRAIGPARK – A CSS security officer was ambushed by suspected armed robbers during a chase through Dunkeld and Craigpark on Monday morning.

The officer responded to an armed robbery near the corner of Hume and Christopherson Roads, Dunkeld, and chased the suspects down Kent Road, into Jan Smuts Avenue, and into Bompas Road.
Rosenthal said the suspects fired at the passenger side of the vehicle, hitting the driver in the arm three times. He was also injured by shards of glass from the windscreen. The security guard did not return fire.
The guard was taken to hospital. Rosenthal said he expected him to be discharged in a few days’ time.
Rosebank police spokesperson Sergeant Bongi Mdletshe said the robbery victim was en route to deposit an undisclosed amount of money at the bank when two cars approached him and prevented him from escaping.
“There were approximately eight men involved. They pointed guns at him, and he co-operated with them. As they were finishing the robbery, the CSS security guard saw them and chased after them,” he said.
Rosenthal added that the victim ran for help and pressed a panic button, although he suspected the security officer reacted to the incident before receiving the alarm.
“We got footage from the resident from whose driveway the suspects ambushed our man, and we also have footage of the vehicles from our Dunkeld cameras, but I’m fairly certain that the suspects have already changed their number plates,” he said.
Rosenthal also said that his company had received many messages of support.
“On behalf of CSS Tactical, I thank everyone who sent us messages of support and good wishes,” he said.
Parkview police spokesperson Princess Mudau said that no arrests had been made, and that Parkview police and Rosebank police would investigate a docket of armed robbery and attempted murder.
7 October, 10.30am
The officer responded to a panic button alarm in Dunkeld, and chased the suspects down Bompas Road.
According to the security company’s Steve Rosenthal, the suspects lay in wait for the security vehicle near the corner of Bompas Road and Rutland Avenue.
As the vehicle passed, the suspects opened fire, discharging approximately 21 rounds, before they fled the scene.
The officer was taken to hospital.
The extent of his injuries was not known.
