PARKTOWN N ORTH – The popular suburb is on its way to becoming a polished northern suburbs gem, thanks to the residents association’s newly formed CIA squad.
The community-in-action squad, under the direction of the association’s Peter Erlank, began its work with the Clean Streets Programme.
First to be tackled was the graffiti on the bus shelter at the corner of 3rd and 7th avenues, with the car park to follow soon.
“The initial phase is to attack the graffiti tagging which is a blight on the suburb. It’s obnoxious and a public nuisance, in addition to contributing to visual pollution,” said association chairperson Lee-Ann Louverdis.
“The appearance of graffiti generates the perception that a downward spiral has begun in the area, even if this is not true.”
Louverdis said it created the perception that if this form of vandalism was tolerated, more serious crimes may also go unchallenged.
“When graffiti remains in a neighbourhood, it sends a message that the community doesn’t care. But we do care, and we’re showing how much we care by tackling the problem right now,” she said.
The initiative is part of the association’s efforts to preserve and enrich the suburb and to revitalise community pride.
“The CIA squad is identifiable by their livery of black bibs with green accents. We ask the community to please be mindful of the squad’s safety as they go about their business. The squad would be appreciative if people were to give them a word of encouragement as they pass by,” said Louverdis.
