Police on the hunt for CCTV hijackers

The attack of a family during a hijacking in the Johannesburg CBD caught on video has caused an uproar on social media networks.

The incident recorded by a CCTV camera situated across the street took place on the corners of Commissioner and Crown streets on 16 November.

The footage shows a black hatchback stopping in front of the family’s vehicle (a white 4X4) while a white Opel Corsa almost immediately parks behind the 4X4, seemingly as a way to prevent the 4X4 from moving.

One man is seen stepping out of the black hatchback with an AK-47 warning other cars not to stop while the other men (who appear to be armed) force the family members out of their vehicle and eventually drive off with the car.

The video has since then gone viral with people sharing the 48 second-long footage on social media networks and expressing their shock.

Captain Obakeng Mabaso of the Gauteng police said the police are looking for the four men appearing in the video footage.

According to other media reports, this was not the first incident of this nature to have occurred in the same area.

However, Mabaso said, “The police have no previous knowledge of similar attacks but the allegations are being investigated.”
