Afriforum will not register for e-tolls

JOBURG - Civil rights organisation AfriForum will not register its company vehicles for e-tolling.

AfriForum CEO Kallie Kriel said if enough motorists refused to register for the tolls, the system would become impractical and force the South African National Roads Agency to reconsider

e-tolls. “The system will simply not be cost-effective,” he added.

He said no one was legally obliged to buy an e-tag. “AfriForum will leave it up to every member of the public, with due consideration of the costs involved, to decide for themselves whether they want to join AfriForum in this civil protest action,” said Kriel.

He added, “If the public accepts e-tolling, an expensive system with high admin costs, without protest government will be able to launch similar projects, without considering more cost-effective recoupment methods.”
