Police nab laptop snatcher

Hillbrow police arrested a suspect for theft out of a motor vehicle.

Police said a man had parked his vehicle on the corner of Pretoria and Twist streets in Hillbrow, and had apparently left valuable personal belongings on the passenger seat.

Police spokesperson Mduduzi Zondo said upon return the man found that his car had been broken into. Zondo said, “The key lock had been tampered with and the suspect had entered the vehicle and taken two laptops that were lying on the seat.”

He said patrolling police noticed the suspect acting suspiciously and carrying two laptops. Zondo said, “Police questioned the suspect and determined that the laptops were indeed stolen.” The suspect was arrested and the laptops were returned to the man.

Zondo appealed to the public to not leave valuable goods visible inside their vehicles, especially as the festive season was drawing nearer. “When thieves see valuable items inside a vehicle they are likely to break into the vehicle and steal your valuables, leaving the car damaged,” he said. “Please ensure that you lock your valuables in the boot to avoid drawing attention to your vehicle.”

The suspect was expected to appear at the Hillbrow Magistrate’s court on charges of theft out of a motor vehicle.
