Car theft on the increase

The theft of motor vehicles in Parkhurst and Rosebank has increased dramatically as the festive season draws closer.

This is according to the Parkview station commander, Colonel Logan Govender during a Parkview Community Security forum.

“Parks residents have started throwing parties, and due to most of them having small yards, visitors [have to] park on the streets,” he said. “This trend is having a negative impact on crime in the area.”

Security companies in attendance, including ADT, CHUBB and NYPD agreed, saying that people were not using their services and letting them know when they were to host parties.

NYPD representative, Emmanuel Manwadu went on to say that some residents even turn down the security company’s offer to guard their cars, in spite of having no security arranged.

“We will knock on their doors and ask them what measures they have in place for the night, and some people will tell us that they will hear their car alarms should anyone try steal their vehicles,” he said.

Manwandu blamed theft of vehicles on negligence by car owners, saying residents should be more careful – especially since the area has a problem of vehicles being broken into and stolen.

Chairman of Community Security Forum, Costa Vranas said residents would have to start taking responsibility and organise for security guards to mind the cars outside while the party takes place inside.

“If a resident is expecting many guests then it would be better to get two security guards, one at both ends so that no car is unattended,” he added.
