Charity walk a hit

GREENSIDE - The 29th annual Pirates Road Running Charity Hat Race, Wobblers and Wigglers, took place on 13 December at Pirates Sports Club, Greenside.

The charity event was a success as the walk drew the support of more than a thousand participants.

Benefitting from the walk was the the Marang House in Northcliff which caters to underprivileged children with diabetes or kidney disease.

Spokesperson for the Pirates Sports and Rugby Club Sue McLaggan said these children are under the care of parents who are either unemployed or deprived.

“Some of these parents either can’t afford to purchase a fridge or don’t have access to running water while others just live far away and can’t get their children to hospital to get their daily treatment,” she explained.

“The house provides facilities that enable the children to keep insulin cold in fridges and nurses are able to monitor children on dialysis.”

The walk appears to have grown each year with last year’s walk attracting men, women, and children with their pets.

The weather didn’t disappoint either as supporters went on their way.

“People either ran or walked the course of just under 8km around the Greenside, Parkview and Zoo Lake area and also supported the beer table which was posted half-way along the route,” said McLaggan.

The day catered to the whole family and everyone appeared to be in good spirits as they did it all for charity.
