Police arrest murder suspect

HILLBROW – Police have arrested a suspect who shot and killed a man in an apparent taxi violence related incident.

Hillbrow police spokesperson Constable Mduduzi Zondo said police were called to a scene at the intersection of Wolmarans and Klein streets where the deceased had been shot five times.

“When police arrived, the suspect fled the scene and they gave chase. The suspect then shot at police who returned fire, shooting him in the leg,” said Zondo.

The 30-year-old was subsequently arrested.

Zondo said police recovered an unlicensed Norinco 9mm firearm and a live round. “He was taken to a nearby hospital under police guard for treatment.”

The suspect is expected to appear at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of murder and attempted murder.
