Clive Scott’s life on stage

“The show is really my journey through life, the people I’ve met, and the scrapes I’ve got into,” said Scott.

The stories he will share in the intimate theatre will include falling in love at age six, his time as lead chorister at Cape Town’s St George’s Cathedral, and his 1965 London stint in The Mousetrap, which he described as “the worst play in the world”.

“I began putting the show together years ago. I love to tell stories, and people loved the stories I told, so I thought I’d extend them,” he said.

Scott was born in Parkview, but grew up and was schooled in Springs.

“We moved to Cape Town after my dad’s death. I went into banking, and was transferred to then-Salisbury, Rhodesia,” he said.

“After two years, I had had enough, and went to the United Kingdom. I was supposed to be there for three months, and ended up staying 12 years.”

Scott said while he did find some work on stage and screen, he spent most of his time waiting tables.

“I washed a lot of dishes, but also picked cherries and apples in Denmark. I had all sorts of experiences during that time.”

“I was in The Villagers not long after I returned to South Africa in 1969, and that really sparked everything off. The film was a smash hit, and the response was absolutely amazing,” he said.

Scott’s last major TV appearance was in Isidingo – The Need.

“I haven’t done much since Isindingo, which is one of the reasons I put Warts and All together,” he said.

“I really enjoy being on stage and the interaction with the audience, which one doesn’t get with film. I sometimes forget things, and if audience members have seen the show before, they’ll happily give me a reminder. There’s a large script in my head, and I hope it all comes out.”

Warts and All will run from 21 until 23 February, 28 February until 2 March, and 7 until 9 March at Foxwood Theatre, 13 5th Street, Houghton Estate.
