Athletes must play it safe

THE PARKS - Sport enthusiasts are urged to be cautious and bear safety in mind while training.

With sport enthusiasts avidly preparing for upcoming events such as the Two Oceans Marathon, Clive Humphrey, managing director of ADT, made the appeal.

“It is very important to let someone know that you are heading out and when you expect you will return,” he said.

He also advised athletes taking part in any training to avoid running or cycling when it is dark and to not do it alone.

“Before you leave home ensure that your cellphone battery is charged and take along enough money to be able to catch a bus or make a phone call if need be,” he added.

Finally, Humphrey mentioned the importance of ensuring the safety of family members and the home. He encouraged athletes to activate their alarm system and make sure that all the gates are locked properly.

More tips include:

q Wear reflective clothing so that motorists are able to see you easily; reflective strips on your shoes are not sufficient.

q Never go out running or cycling while listening to music through earphones. This might prevent you from hearing an oncoming vehicle, a potential mugger or a vicious dog.

q Vary your route as often as you can and steer clear of very quiet or ‘unsavoury’ areas.
