Rosebank police spokesperson Sergeant Bongi Mdletshe said the suspect, who had a firearm, was wearing orange tekkies.
The suspect took an iPad, laptop and jewellery before fleeing the scene.
“No lives were lost and no shots were fired during the incident,” he said.
Mdletshe said it was common for criminals to follow people to their homes before robbing them of valuable items.
He said community members should be on the constant look-out when they drive home.
“Please check your mirrors – if you suspect anyone is following you or notice any suspicious behaviour, drive to the nearest police station,” he said.
Mdletshe appealed to members of the public who may have information that could lead to an arrest to come forward.
