Domestic Watch meetings focus on holiday season

JOBURG - Domestic Watch is ready to take on another month of lessons and training in safety and crime prevention for domestic workers and gardeners.

According to Domestic Watch and South African Police Service training consultant Penny Steyn, the programme helps to inspire better relationships with employers, security infrastructures, companies and the police.

Individuals who attend the classes learn how to practise the kind of behaviour that can help prevent crime.

Participants are taught how to pass on information about criminals – and even report family members.

The March meetings will focus on the holiday season.

“With all the upcoming holidays within the next two months, we definitely need to have a very good look at this topic,” said Steyn.

“This lesson will be filled with very important and relevant information helpful for any holiday season when often crime tends to peak.”

Steyn feels that is important that employers empower their staff to take care of themselves and their homes in their absence.

“Often our homeowners don’t know how to instruct their staff [on what] to do or not do,” she explained.

Steyn encouraged more residents to sign their domestic workers up for the course.

The programme takes place at different locations throughout the Parks, and welcomes all workers from the area to join in and learn:

  •  25 March: 12pm at the The War Museum, on Eastwold Way in Saxonwold.
  •  26 March: 12pm at the Methodist Church on 7th Avenue in Parktown North.
  •  28 March: 10am at St Columba’s Church on Lurgan Road, in Parkview.
  •  28 March: 12pm at Wesleyan Church, corners of Beaumont and Norfolk avenues, Craighall Park.
