The Bunny Hop Haven confronts guinea pig overpopulation through sterilisation drive

The Bunny Hop Haven seeks community support towards its guinea pig sterilisation programme, aimed at preventing overpopulation and neglect among rescued animals.

Theon will help prevent the overpopulation and neglect of guinea pigs, improving their welfare.
According to The Bunny Hop Haven’s Andrea Berzen, the organisation recently took in several guinea pigs, only to find out that some of the females were already pregnant.

The pregnancies were already too advanced for the procedure to be performed without harming them.

“The biggest thing is overpopulation, because then these animals are kept in small spaces where they cannot move freely. It’s really about being able to care for these animals.”

She explained that many people buy guinea pigs without understanding how quickly they reproduce. Male guinea pigs are said to reach sexual maturity at just three weeks old, frequently causing accidental breeding and even inbreeding, a real issue if animals are not sterilised or separated.

“The cycle is perpetuated. You can have mothers, grandmothers, and siblings breeding, and then there are all these babies that need homes.”

The rescue has also encountered situations where guinea pigs are kept in small overcrowded cages, with little to no room to move. “They’re just packed in. These poor things have to fight to get food. It’s very sad.”

Berzen added that while the guinea pigs are in such overcrowded spaces, it is difficult to give them proper care in terms of hygiene, feeding, and their overall well-being.

Guinea pig sterilisation at The Bunny Hop Haven is a continuous process that relies entirely on the availability of funding.

Six male guinea pigs were recently sterilised, and very soon another group is expected to undergo the procedure.

To help cover these costs, The Bunny Hop Haven hosts fundraisers and depends on donations from the community, schools, and volunteers.

Its latest raffle offers participants the incredible chance to win a three-night stay at Monateng Safari Lodge. Every ticket bought will go towards the sterilisation and care of the rescue’s guinea pigs.

The Bunny Hop Haven aims to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome animals, and follows a very thorough adoption process to make sure guinea pigs, and all the other small animals at the rescue, find responsible homes where they will receive space to move around and be taken care of.
