Rolex watches can cost up to R5 million and over; watch enthusiasts consider this brand one of the best in the history of watch-making.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Bongi Mdletshe said they were investigating two cases where armed robbers followed owners of the expensive brand and robbed them off their watches and other valuable items.
In the first incident, the victim was allegedly followed by a black Range Rover from Edenvale to their home in Saxonwold. The suspects made off with the watch and other valuable items including a laptop, cellphone and wallet.
In the latest incident, Mdletshe said a woman driving a BMW was followed by a grey Chevrolet Lumina to the parking lot at The Zone @ Rosebank.
“As she was parking an armed suspect wearing a balaclava approached the woman and demanded her valuables,” said Mdletshe.
The woman allegedly refused to hand over her valuables, and two more suspects – who were also armed – approached the vehicle and forced the door open, before robbing her of the luxurious watch and other valuable items.
“The suspects also wanted to take her car, but the woman refused,” he said.
Mdletshe said owners of the expensive accessory must be cautious when they are wearing it. “If you notice a suspicious vehicle following you, don’t drive home. Rather go to the nearest police station,” he said.
Mdletshe said in both incidents, the suspects had used fake number plates. He appealed to members of the public who may have information that could lead to an arrest to come forward.
