Norwood boys cry for help

Norwood young stars, south africa, hope for mundial, poland.

CHILDREN’S football team, Norwood Young Stars Academy may fail to represent South Africa in the second Football World Cup of children from care homes in Poland due to the lack of financial backing.

The 10-member team, its coach, Didier Mbendje and carer Venita Masisi are supposed to be in Poland from 25 to 28 July.

Masisi, who is also the team manager, said most of the parents could not afford air tickets and because the team has no sponsor, parents would have to fork out of their own pockets for the trip.

Masisi said the trip was a great opportunity for children to be spotted by overseas clubs who can bring players to their development sides.

She said, “I am excited about the trip and the sky is the limit for the boys, but the problem is we don’t have a sponsor, and most of the parents cannot afford the trip and we also need the training equipment.

“We have been looking forward to this development but we need the community at large to support us. We are a disadvantaged team, we cannot even afford to register with the local football leagues but no one cares from our community. This is supposed to be our happiest moment but now we are worried about how we are going to get sponsors for our trip. We appeal to Good Samaritans to come to our rescue.”

The Stars will be among the 32 teams that will be participating in the event from 26 to 27 July in Warsaw, Poland. The games to be played include group phases, knockout rounds and a grand finale.
