Norwood to honour Madiba with clean-up of the area
While the rest of the country will commemorate Mandela Day on 18 July, The Norwood Orchards Resident’s Association (Nora) will take it a step further and commemorate it for an entire week.
The association will once again host the Clean Green Norwood initiative which encourages residents to honour the late former statesman by posting pictures on Facebook of various clean-ups in the area during the week. At the end of the week, the association will host a clean-up of Norwood Park.
According to Brett McDougall, chairman of the association, the initiative encourages residents, businesses and scholars to take pride in the community and assist in keeping it clean.
“Nora wishes to honour Nelson Mandela by putting into practice two of his great qualities – respect for others and public service. We are able to achieve this in our neighbourhood by focusing on public spaces,” he said.
McDougall added that residents who were unable to take part in the Norwood clean-up could elect to clean up their own street or a neglected area nearby during the course of the week.
The clean-up will take place on 20 July but residents are encouraged to do their own clean-up from 14-20 July.
He said he hoped that the initiative would foster broader participation from residents, as pavements and parks were the most “democratic spaces for people to meet and mix freely”.
“We hope that through this initiative we promote pride in our neighbourhood and a sense of ownership of our public space,” he said.
Photos of individual efforts can be e-mailed to noracommittee@gmail.com and they will be posted on the association’s facebook page, The Republic of Norwood.
