Women’s colours unfurl at Con Hill
BRAAMFONTEIN - CONSTITUTION Hill will host the first annual Colours of a Woman weekend comprising three significant events, in celebration of Women's Day.
The weekend, launched in partnership with Gracefully Consulting will comprise three significant events; a dialogue, a march, and a festival.
8 August: BARS: The Price of Freedom
“[The dialogue will] commemorate the old female prisoners who courageously took a stand in 1956, as well as speak to the ex-wardresses who will give their version of the experience on the other side of the prison bars,” said Con Hill spokesperson Phetsile Nxumalo.
The dialogue will be hosted by Power FM producer, Zamantungwa Khumalo, who is passionate about African development, women’s empowerment and entrepreneurship.
Artist, writer and designer Ntsiki Mazwai will perform poetry at this high tea event.
The dialogue will take place at the Women’s Gaol, Constitution Hill, from 11am until 3pm.
9 August: Colours of a Woman march
“The march is aimed at recreating the Women’s March of 1956 with 5 000 people, demonstrating unity and support of our nation in raising awareness for [five causes that speak to] the plight of young women,” said Nxumalo.
Each of the five causes will be represented by a colour: Abuse of all forms (yellow), menstrual dignity (purple), basic education (blue), human trafficking (green), and teenage pregnancy (pink).
“[The march] will be led by artists, politicians, businesswomen, men and children of South Africa,” she said.
“A petition will be signed by all attendees and handed to the justices of the Constitutional Court.”
The march will begin at Constitutional Square, Constitution Hill, at 8am.
9 August: Colours of a Woman festival
Women’s Day at Con Hill will end off with the Colours of a Woman festival which, according to Nxumalo, will “combine a colourful mixture of the arts, culture and heritage of women, through platforms for women, by women”.
The festival will feature an arts, crafts and fashion market, organisations that represent women’s causes, food stalls, live performances, and a music concert.
The festival will take place at Constitution Hill from 11am until 5pm.
“We acknowledge that there are as many ways to express yourself as a woman as there are women in the world,” said Gracefully Consulting MD, Phindile Dhlamini.
“[This initiative] is just one of the shades that we can use to celebrate, liberate, and empower women and men of South Africa.”
