Fond farewells

Seven years ago, I moved up to Joburg with a suitcase of clothing and a backpack filled with a few favourite books, CDs, and my toothbrush.

I moved to the City of Gold on a whim, with no real plan other than to leave small town Eastern Cape behind me, be open to adventure, and see where that got me.

In a world where we’re often encouraged to find goals, to plan ahead, to become cogs in some great machine, my adventure could sound like madness – and there are times I’m not so sure it wasn’t a crazy decision.

It’s at those times that I remind myself of words said to me by my former yoga teacher: The way that can be named is not the way.

Those few words, a paraphrase from the Tao Te Ching, inspired me to move from bookselling to journalism.

For three years I have been privileged to play a part in chronicling and supporting Joburg’s ever-emerging, ever-evolving urban culture, writing for City Buzz and my previous publication, Rosebank Killarney Gazette.

I never dreamed I would help workshop a new publication into existence, and then find myself at its helm for a time.

I have been exposed to incredible people doing incredible things, I’ve met people I’ve hero-worshipped for years, I’ve been welcomed into people’s studios, workshops and homes, and I’ve had an indecent amount of fun.

As wonderful as this has been, I find myself growing ever more envious of these wonderful, creative people… And so the time has come for me to try my hand at new things, and maybe, just maybe, one day I’ll welcome a young journalist into my workspace.

My colleagues, my contacts, my readers have all made this job worthwhile.

Thank you for your support, and thank you for reading my stories about our incredible city.

Shine on, Joburg. Shine on.

At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention. Happy reading!
