Taxi loses wheel, passengers escape unharmed
PARKWOOD – Taxi passengers were left unharmed after a taxi lost its wheel along Jan Smuts Avenue in Parkwood, which resulted in the arrest of the driver.
Parkview police officers, Sergeant David Rikhotso and Constable Busisiwe Zitha were doing routine patrols when the white taxi they had been travelling behind, lost its rear wheel. Police spokesperson Sergeant Lloyd Ramovha said this culminated in the taxi, which had passengers in transit, reaching a sudden halt.
“The [police] members narrowly missed colliding with the said taxi… The wheel spun out of control and collided with another vehicle in the opposite direction, resulting in minor damages to the said vehicle. Fortunately no one got injured,” said Ramovha.
Police established that the taxi was not roadworthy and upon questioning, the 42-year-old taxi driver failed to produce a driver’s licence. He was arrested and charged with reckless and negligent driving as well as inconsiderate driving.
The taxi driver appeared at the Hillbrow Magistrates’ Court and paid an admission of guilt fine of R1 500.
