Edtech innovator and LM Radio host Natashia Bearam highlights power of diverse career paths
From pure mathematics and educational television to broadcasting and instructional design, Natashia Bearam explains how curiosity shaped her multi-faceted career.
Life is full of possibilities, and individuals have the ability to choose the paths they wish to follow.
For Natashia Bearam, a career has never been about choosing one route and staying on it. As a qualified mathematician, entrepreneur, instructional designer, and broadcaster, Bearam has spent her life exploring different fields, refusing to let a single job title define her.

“Your position doesn’t define who you are,” Bearam said. “I don’t like to let one thing define who I am, which is also why I’ve done so much.”
Her journey began with mathematics. After studying actuarial science at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), she realised after a year that an actuarial career was not for her. She changed direction and completed her degree in pure mathematics.
While her mathematical background might seem worlds apart from her career in media, Bearam strongly believes the skills she attained continue to shape her approach to work.
“Maths teaches you life skills like problem-solving, logic, and how to think through a situation,” she said. “Maths hasn’t been abandoned. It has created a way of thinking that I’ve used in everything.”

After completing her degree, Bearam moved into educational television, teaching mathematics on the DStv channel Mindset. She later entered radio and journalism around the same period, proving that being passionate about more than one career choice is possible.
Today, Bearam works in education technology as an instructional designer, creating interactive online learning experiences while hosting a 05:00 show on LM Radio. Additionally, she is pursuing a master’s degree in education technology.
“I feel like, for me personally, I’ve been curious and brave enough to try different things.”
She offers advice for young people starting their adult lives: “Every expert was a beginner at some point.”
