Cellphone upgrade fraudster nabbed

It is alleged the suspect went to a cellphone shop situated in Hamlin Street and Nursery Road in Norwood to apply for an upgrade using a fraudulent identity document.

Norwood police station spokesperson Nonzwakazi Tsoanyane said, “While the consultant was still busy processing the deal, the owner of the identification document contacted the shop and informed them that his original documents were with the perpetrator.

Tsoanyane said, “The owner informed the consultant that he did not apply for any cellphone upgrade.” While the perpetrator was still in the shop, the consultant contacted the police who then arrived on the scene. The 39-year-old suspect was apprehended. He is expected to appear at the Hillbrow Magistrate’s Court soon.
