Scathing attack on You Magazine’s ‘bald’ celebs

JOBURG - You Magazine, Shashi Naidoo, Poppy Ntshongwana, Zakeeya Patel, Elma Postma, Leanne Liebenberg and LeAnne Dlamini have had to endure some serious criticism from You Magazine readers over the most recent issue of the mag.

The latest issue which featured “bald” pictures of celebrities, has sparked outrage among cancer survivors.

UPDATE: You and Lee-Ann respond to ‘bald’ celeb outrage

The celebrities who did not shave their heads, and rather used Photoshop to create the “bald” images, have all been touched by cancer in some way. Going bald was therefore aimed at increasing awareness about cancer in the issue, the article stated.

Have you seen the pictures? Take a look below and tell us what you think:

It seems that South Africans feels that a cause as big as this would require people to go all in or not at all.

Twitter has been abuzz with people slamming the magazine for the article and photos.

Citybuzz.co.za has also received its share of comments on the controversial story.

Annalene Smit wrote: Shame on these people – celebs and editors! What a slap in the face to my family I have lost. NO respect for any of you fake people. SIS.

Tanya Da SIlva Ferreira wrote: I am a breast cancer survivor. I think it is a false way of showing awareness. There are so many fighters that would have been the cover model if asked, that would have been touching, You Magazine could have called for cancer fighters.

Sonja wrote: Having walked the road of cancer with my late mom, this nauseates me. They are trying to use this platform for their own glory. They are clueless [about] the trauma cancer patients go through. Even if they shaved off their hair now it would not help. Pathetic people!

Nadine wrote: I issue them a challenge, if those celebs shave their heads for real then so will I. What they did for coverage, for media attention and to sell magazines was beyond cold, cruel and disgusting. I will gladly shave my head if they do. I have more physically to hide than they do because of my shunt. So, are they real women or fakes?
None of the celebrities featured in the magazine have been available for comment, but this does not mean this media frenzy is over.
