Bra run for breast cancer

PARKHURST - About 200 people participated in the Bra run along 4th Avenue in Parkhurst on 26 October.

Despite the overcast weather, the crowd dressed in a variation of pink undergarments and dashed back and fourth to raise awareness for the Pink Drive.

The initiative is aimed at helping women all over the country, especially in rural and disadvantaged communities, in the early detection of breast cancer.

Funds raised during the event go towards the mobile clinic; a truck outfitted with a small examination room, a small reception area and a radiology section.

The Pink Drive also teaches women how to do breast self-examinations, aiming to spread breast cancer education and awareness to women all over the country.

Based on the principle that early detection can save lives, nurse Tebogo Lekgothoane who travels with the mobile clinic, says it is important that women pay attention. “The best time to check is seven days after your period, look for lumps that are hard, check the size and shape of the breasts, take note if there is discharge,” she said.
