Man arrested after shooting good Samaritan

HILLBROW – Hillbrow police arrested a suspect for attempted murder after he shot and wounded a man who tried to stop him and his accomplice from robbing a pedestrian.

The incident took place at the corner of Banket and Pietersen streets. According to police the suspect and his accomplice were in the process of robbing a pedestrian when a taxi driver and some of his passengers tried to thwart the robbery. Hillbrow police spokesperson Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo said one of the suspects had a gun while the other was carrying a toy gun.

Zondo said, “One of the men in the taxi got out of the taxi and approached the suspects. The armed suspect took out his gun, fired three shots and wounded the man who was trying to stop them robbing a pedestrian.”

Zondo stated that both suspects fled the scene, but police who were in the vicinity and gave chase. The officers managed to corner the gunman in Banket Street. “Police apprehended him and found him in possession of an unlicensed firearm and four rounds of live ammunition. The serial number was not filed off,” Zondo said. The other suspect managed to escape and was still on the run.

He added that the suspect was charged with attempted murder, and being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He was expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.
