Talia Goldsmith tunes into her roots

CONSTITUTION HILL - With the use of cardboard and scrap metal, Talia Goldsmith has created an array of intriguing sculptures that she's named the Singing Roots.

The exhibition, Singing Roots is showing at Constitution Hill in Braamfontein and will run until 20 November.

The Israel-born artist said it took her two years to produce Singing Roots with every piece having drawn inspiration from the thoughts and teachings of her grandmother.

“Whenever I would ask my grandmother something, she would sing to me… I’d get so frustrated and tell her she was not listening. She’d turn to me and explain that I was not listening because if I had been, then I would hear her,” she said.

“This exhibition is similar to those teachings as it looks at tuning into your own intuition and instincts… looking within, literally listening, engaging with your inner voice and listening to your inner soul.”

During a walkabout with City Buzz, Goldsmith pointed to each sculpture explaining what each element meant to her.

“I started working with cardboard and soon realised how hard it was to manipulate it, but I continued to pull it apart and let it lead me. I didn’t create any of these with a specific concept or knowing what each element would portray – it was only after I had made the pieces did my daughter point out that I had made roots,” she said.

Goldsmith also explained how she felt it appropriate for her art to be exhibited at the Women’s Goal at Constitution Hill.

“It seemed fitting because everything and everyone has roots. The women that were held prisoner here wanted their voices to be heard… they too have their roots elsewhere,” she added.

“What is important to note however, is how I have also grouped the figures together. This way give the feeling of being in a community – as in going back to your roots.”

The exhibition runs till 20 November at the Woman’s Goal, Constitution Hill.
