Woman burnt with acid by ex-boyfriend recovers
SYDENHAM – Norwood police have refuted claims made by the employer of the woman who was allegedly burnt with acid by her ex-boyfriend.
The employer claimed the police were dragging their feet in arresting the perpetrator.
In the article Ex-boyfriend burns woman with acid, North Eastern Tribune, week ending 14 November, Norwood police spokesperson Sergeant Nurse Sanyane said the woman was fighting for her life in an intensive care unit after her ex-boyfriend allegedly poured acid liquid over her, burning her face and body. The incident took place at the corner of Pembroke Street and 9th Avenue. Sanyane said the woman was walking on the street when her ex-boyfriend charged towards her and poured the acid on her face and body. She said, “The liquid acid started on the face and fell down to her body which left her unconscious.” Sanyane said the boyfriend fled the scene.
She said the emergency services were called and the woman was rushed to Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.
Sanyane said the victim was later transferred to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto.
The woman was in a very critical condition as she was in an intensive care unit. She stated, “The police are also waiting for her statement, but because of her condition now, she can’t even talk. We will wait until she is able to talk so that we can get her statement as to what exactly happened and why the ex-boyfriend poured the acid on her. At the moment we don’t know the cause of this.”
However, in the IOL news, on 24 November, the employer named Jennifer* claimed that the Norwood police had done nothing, despite the fact that they have an address and cellphone number for the perpetrator, who continues sending SMSes telling her he is going ‘to finish off the job’. But Sanyane refuted the claims and described them as ‘unfounded’. “We don’t know if the employer got that police were never told about the text messages, or it was just for news selling.”
Sanyane said the investigations were in advanced stages as police were following the leads. “We were told that he fled to Durban,” she said.
