She also was ranked in the top 1 percent for the subject English Home Language and was the other joint recipient of the Dux Scholar Trophy at Kingsmead College.
Cohen has also achieved exceptional results for Music and plays the violin for the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra.
She would like to work for Doctors without Borders and aims to specialise in trauma surgery.
Kingsmead College matriculants have yet again achieved outstanding results for the Independent Examinations Board this year.
Out of a total of 55 candidates, 198 distinctions were achieved averaging three distinctions per pupil.
The class of 2014 had a 100 percent pass rate, with all the pupils receiving entrance to a University Degree Course.
Head Girl Catherine Cohen and Deputy Head Girl Elke van der Walt were both ranked by the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) for “Outstanding and Commendable Achievement”. Their results fell within the top 5 percent of all IEB Matriculants. They both had high distinctions in six or more subjects and scored above 80 percent for Life Orientation. Only 63 students were given this recognition nationally.
In addition to the high achievers acknowledged in the gallery, Kingsmead College would also like to commend the following pupils who achieved excellent results for specific subjects and were ranked within the top 1 percent for that subject.
Esna-Anre Beattie in Geography and Life Sciences. Nicola Baylis in Geography, Stefanie Brunke in Life Sciences, Emily Elphick in Advanced Programme English, Alexandra Hayden in Life Orientation and Sarah Wilmot in Geography.

Elke van der Walt, Deputy Head Girl, achieves eight distinctions and was ranked in the overall top 5 percent of IEB Matriculants.
Her exceptional results in Mathematics and Advanced Programme Mathematics augurs well for her chosen degree in Actuarial Science at the University of Stellenbosch.
She is ranked in the top 1 percent for the subjects of Afrikaans (home language), Life Sciences and Mathematics.
And was also the joint recipient of the Dux Scholar Trophy at Kingsmead College.
Van der Walt would like to get involved in building finance models for charities one day and has worked for the St Martin’s-in-the-veld Anglican Church soup kitchen.

Andrea Barnard achieves eight distinctions.
Her exceptional results in Science and Biology augurs well for her chosen degree in medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand.
She is ranked in the top 1 percent for the subject Afrikaans (first additional language).
Barnard’s interests include hockey, squash, art, photography and travelling. She was awarded the Dux Proxime and Leadership Award at Kingsmead College.
She would like to specialise in paediatric surgery and aspires one day to perform pro-bono reconstructive surgery.
Caitlin Johnstone achieves eight distinctions and was ranked in the top 1 percent for Life Sciences. She also achieves high results for Biology which augurs well for her chosen Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Stellenbosch.
Her interests include reading, dancing and listening to music.
One of the highlights of her school life was the President’s Award camp.
Georgina Hyland, Head of Sport, achieves eight distinctions. Her exceptional results in Maths, Life Sciences (ranked in the top 1 percent) and Physical Science augurs well for her chosen field of Biomedical Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand.
She is also a keen waterpolo player and was involved in Kingsmead’s ‘Learn-to-Swim’ Outreach Programme, which she thoroughly enjoyed.
“She has lead by example and has been a true ambassador for Kingsmead Sports,” said headmistress, Lisa Kaplan.
Nokuthula Makhoba, Deputy Head Girl (Pastoral), achieves two distinctions.
Her excellent results in Science and Biology augurs well for her chosen degree in medicine at the University of Stellenbosch.
Makhoba played in Provincial U18 A-team hockey for southern Gauteng and she intends to continue to play for the University of Stellenbosch.

As a result, she was awarded the ‘Care, Consideration and Perseverance Award’ at Kingsmead College.
